SAMPLE LETTER RE: NATIONAL GREYHOUND AWARENESS WEEK

Dear letters to the Editor

This week (May 25th - 31st May) is national Greyhound Awareness Week in the
UK,
a special time held every year when greyhound advocates across the UK hold
events in their local areas to highlight the appalling plight of the racing
greyhound.

Greyhound racing began in the UK in 1926, since then thousands of greyhounds
have been and are still destroyed every year once they are retired from
racing, average age 3-4 years old. Only the lucky few end up in rescue.
Additionally, thousands of greyhound pups are destroyed each year because
they are considered 'unsuitable for racing'. The RSPCA believes: "at least
20 greyhounds a day - either puppies which do not make the track, or
'retired' dogs aged three or four - simply 'disappear', presumed killed".

Many greyhounds every year also sustain serious, sometimes fatal injuries
whilst racing. One has to question the morality of this dire situation
and those that bet on greyhounds are sadly fuelling an industry that kills
innocent dogs.

It is not surprising that commercial greyhound racing is now in rapid
decline with more and more evidence being revealed about the true horrors
happening within this industry regularly hitting the
national headlines. More people are now boycotting greyhound racing an
industry that exploits dogs, all for the price of a sad bet. It is a tragic
reflection on a so-called nation of supposed animal lovers when thousands of
healthy
young dogs (man's best friend) are being killed and abused every year to
support an industry
that exists solely to make money. The root of all evil,
but the people of this nation can help to put
an end to all this uneccessary suffering of our wonderful greyhounds once
and for all by simply boycotting this shameful industry.

Greyhounds make the most wonderful companions and contrary to belief - they
don't need a lot of exercise. Please consider adopting a greyhound from your
local, responsible rescue. Many of these dogs have run their hearts out and
are often betrayed by their unscrupulous owners who have no further use for
them.
Have a heart for the greyhounds - please don't bet on or attend greyhound
racing, that way this industry will fall into further demise.

Mahatma Gandhi once said "The future depends on what we do in the present".

I say the future of greyhound racing in this country can be confined to our
history books if only the general public do not support it.

Thank you
Yours sincerely

Please provide your name, address and telephone number (many newspapers
require this in addition to your name and address, but the contact number
normally doesn't get published)

THANK YOU

Please remember to keep all correspondence polite.

Each and everyone of us can be a voice for the voiceless to help make those
positive changes we all desperately need to stop the suffering of innocent
animals. YOU CAN JOIN THOSE BRILLIANT ANTI-RACING GROUPS LISTED ABOVE TO BE
AN EVEN BIGGER VOICE FOR THE GREYHOUNDS.

WE ALL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE FOR THESE INNOCENT
GENTLE DOGS WHO ARE EXPLOITED
Many thanks for your much needed support for the greyhounds in 'National
Greyhound Awareness Week' 2012.

----------------------------------------------------------GREYHOUND AWARENESS WEEK May 25th - 31st Please try to take part!Greyhound Awareness Week gives an opportunity for all those concerned aboutthe plight of greyhounds to educate the public about the mass slaughter ofdogs caused by the greyhound racing industry. With a large enough boycott by ordinary people, the industry can be broughtto its knees and the suffering and untimely death of thousands of greyhoundsprevented.Street stalls, demos outside greyhound tracks, betting shop pickets andother events will be taking place throughout the country. Anyone who wouldlike to organise or take part in an event in their local area, pleasecontact Action for Greyhounds (info@actionforgreyhounds.co.uk or 01603469864) for leaflets, posters, petition forms etc.It would also help greatly if all of our supporters/sympathisers could writeletters to their local papers about Greyhound Awareness Week. Below is asample letter you can send, or if you so wish, you can compose your own.SAMPLE LETTER RE GREYHOUND AWARENESS WEEKMay 25th - 31st is Greyhound Awareness Week, when events are held across theUK to draw public attention to the plight of greyhounds.According to international greyhound protection organisation Action forGreyhounds, over 10,000 greyhounds, bred for the British racing industry, are "put down" every year, after failing to make the grade as racers or whentheir "careers" on the tracks come to an end.An RSPCA report on greyhound racing has stated that "at least 20 greyhoundsa day - either puppies which do not make the track, or 'retired' dogs agedthree or four - simply 'disappear', presumed killed".In addition, a large number of greyhounds sustain serious, sometimes fatal, injuries whilst racing, due to the dangerous nature of the tracks.Members of the public can help put an end to this horrific situation by notattending dog tracks or betting on greyhound racing, so this appallingindustry fades away through lack of financial support. For more information, please visit the Action for Greyhounds website atwww.actionforgreyhounds.co.ukYours sincerely,NameAddressTelephone number (many newspapers require this in addition to your name andaddress, but it doesn't get published)_______________________________________________________Website: www.actionforgreyhounds.co.ukIf you would like to help protect other animals, as well as greyhounds, seehttp://www.animalaid.org.uk/h/n/campaignsPlease feel free to forward/crosspost/circulate this message.
