TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Tucson City Council has officially won it's battle against Tucson
Greyhound Park and its practice of giving greyhounds anabolic steroids.

Tonight the Tucson City Council formally adopted an ordinance to keep anyone
from giving those types of drugs to dogs in city limits, by a unanimous
vote.

It was a direct response to activities involving members of the Tucson
Greyhound Park.

Tucson News Now caught up with the park's CEO last month, who did not attend
the council meeting Tuesday. He said the steroids were being used as a form
of birth control for female dogs.

But, the council didn't see things his way.

Council members believed park officials were taking dogs from South Tucson,
where anabolic steroids are illegal, and bringing them to Tucson to use the
drugs.

Now both South Tucson and Tucson have banned that practice and council
member Steve Kozachik is putting pressure on the Pima County Board of
Supervisors to take up the same policy.

"Their answer was well we'll study it in a couple of more committees. You
know look if this thing was studied it went to a public vote in 2008, we
studied it in here and if the board of supervisors cant just see the ethical
framework of what we're doing and just jump on board then really I'm
disappointed in them," he said.

Kozachik says he has spoken with animal experts who say these steroids can
cause serious health problems for the dogs who receive them.
