A charity that rescues racing dogs from the scrapheap has sent out an
emotional plea for help.

The Greyhound Awareness League (GAL) stops former racers from being
abandoned after their life on the track.

Now their small but dedicated team has urged animal lovers across Ayrshire
to open up their homes and become foster carers.

The group, formed in 1998, aims to rescue and rehome dogs which have fallen
on hard times.

But they admit it's a constant battle to provide for the endless chain of
ex-racers leaving the track.

Janet Russell, who volunteers as part of the rehoming team in Ayrshire, said
adoption is key.

She added: "The number of dogs that need cared for after their racing
careers is huge.

"Sadly, that is something that will never stop and there will always be a
need for organisations like ours.

"Racing dogs have a very short career and, after that, they become pets like
any other."

The GAL offers full healthcare for any animals ahead of their rehoming.

Laura Dixon, foster co-ordinator, said: "We have so many dogs with lovely
personalities and they would make great additions to any family.

"Anyone who could be a foster carer or adopt one of our great dogs would be
a huge help to us."
